Inktober 2019: The Map-pening
Like most artists, I tend to ignore Inktober until it’s happening, panic, and half-heartedly throw together some drawings. I tell myself I’m not following the theme list because self care.
This year, I did something a little bit different. I actually thought about the challenge of Inktober and thought about what I want to improve as an artist. And I decided: dungeon maps.
You see, I’m a regular dungeon master for a weekly ttrpg game with friends. We tend to play very ‘theatre-of-the-mind’ and it’s a lot of fun, but rarely do we dive into the world of maps. As an artist and a DM, I thought I was missing out on an important skill. Which brings me to…
I’ve decided to use this month to up my map drawing game. I threw this on my social media and didn’t think much of it. I’ve even worked through the first two on the list!
Much to my surprise, something amazing has happened. My original list took off on Twitter and other artists are working through these prompts this month. Even in just two days, I’ve received dozens of DMs and links to sketches and renderings by incredible artists. I am humbled and amazed by the talent on display — and so proud to be a part of this incredible community.
A super small collection are below - head to my Instagram and Twitter (or search #rollforinktober) to find more.

Inktober Day 1: We start in a tavern. (never done inktober, but I’ve been wanting to do traditional art, so it couldn’t come at a better time!) pic.twitter.com/4rMdldDTXG

I don’t think I can #Inktober2019 daily but I’ve hopped onto @livelygold’s prompt list for today! Bit of a graphite redux rather than ink but this is my take on “City in the clouds” ☁️✨ pic.twitter.com/0qS39OWJBJ
